The guide to picking out your smart home tech
Technology advances at a rapid pace, and more and more innovations are springing up that make life around the home easier. But with so much on offer on the market, finding the right tech for you can be a challenge. So, we’ve put together a helpful guide, putting forward some questions you should ask yourself before investing in any new additions.

1. What are the main functions?
First things first, do your research and find out the main functions of the tech in question. Does it control one thing, such as your lights or your central heating? Or is it a multi-purpose piece of kit that can control different aspects of your home in one? Think about what you really need from your smart home tech, and narrow down your options based on this.

2. Is it good value?
Following on from question number one, think carefully about whether the technology will truly be worth the cost to you – there’s no point investing a lot of your hard earned cash in something that you won’t use in six month’s time.

3. Are there possibilities for integration?
For this one, look closely at the manufacturer. Are they a forward thinking, active company who might have new functionalities and pieces of exciting tech to integrate in the future? Technology is always advancing, so picking smart home tech that can be easily upgraded in the future can save you time and money in the long run.

4. How easy is it to install?
Any new appliances or technologies take time to set up and put in, but with busy lives you don’t want anything that will be too disruptive to your day-to-day activities. Consider how much time the technology will take to install and how much time it will take you to get to grips with versus its actual time saving and convenience capabilities when up and running.

5. Will it fit with your décor?
Once you’ve thought carefully about the functions and practicalities of the smart tech, you should also consider how it looks. Some smart tech light switches can stick out like a sore thumb, and this is not ideal if you pride yourself on a perfect house. Look carefully at the design, and think about whether it will easily blend with it’s surroundings.
